To replace their outdated monorail, we installed an Electric Monorail System at Volvo Cars in Ghent. The monorail system transports cars by means of carriers throughout the production process.
Approach
We took charge of the mechanical and the electrical part, the transport system, as well as the reconstruction of the streel frame around it. Furthermore, we also renewed all the carriers and handled the software.
In the new monorail system, the cars are picked up by their wheels instead of by the chassis. But, since not all cars have the exact same wheelbase, we provided a system inside the carriers that indexes them. This means that the carriers can be shortened or extended, depending on the current wheelbase. This allows the monorail to be used to transport different models of Volvo Cars.
In contrast to the old system, the new monorail system is capable of lifting cars and placing them on a rotating line, where people are stationed. This is made possible by lowering the carrier until it’s five centimetres above the line, while moving along at the same speed as the conveyor. Then, the car is effortlessly placed on the moving conveyor in order for the employees to continue their operations.
Result
The new system indexes the carriers to allow them to transport several models. Production employees are now able to work on the undercarriage of the car as well. On top of that, part of production was situated in another location in the factory before. Thanks to this new system, this is now integrated in the line and its procedure has been optimised.
